Lay summary
The general health of Pacific people is poor, their education and social status low, compared the rest of the New Zealand population. The most recent New Zealand Health Survey reported higher rates of obesity and diabetes amongst Pacific peoples, 67% and 9% respectively. The main aim of my proposal is to examine the responsiveness of non-government organisations (i.e. church groups, community trusts) to support and sustain community-based healthy lifestyle programmes in Pacific communities in Auckland. Specific research questions may include:
• What are the views of those non-government organisations towards promoting and supporting a community-based healthy initiatives?
• What barriers and challenges do they face promoting and supporting community-based healthy initiatives?
• Do they see the usefulness of digital technologies for servicing and meeting the health needs of their communities? Why? In what way?
I will learn to conduct focus group talanoa with 6 groups of 4-5 people who are members of Pacific churches and non-government organisations.
