Lay summary
An informed innovative approach to mental health care in New Zealand is needed. Research has demonstrated that community-based pharmacists are readily accessible and willing healthcare providers to deliver both a brief intervention for patients and connect patients with the appropriate services for their needs. To seek the best outcomes for all New Zealanders, we need a culturally relevant model which needs to be developed with co-design and consultation. We recognise often interventions are based on a Western biomedical view of health. They do not take into consideration the Māori world view and belief systems surrounding health and wellbeing, for example, Te Whare Tapa Whā, developed by Professor Durie. This research activation project will help form relationships and engage a consultation group to understand what culturally relevant model needs. Successful completion would lead to further health delivery research in large-scale application of this intervention model in New Zealand for mental health.
