Liver transplantation in children has excellent outcomes but during the adolescent and young adult years, patients commonly experience challenges with their healthcare such as taking medications and attending appointments. These issues can lead to liver rejection resulting in another liver transplant, or death. Our experience in Aotearoa is that Māori adolescents and young adults are more likely to experience these challenges and therefore have worse health outcomes than Pākehā patients. The only deaths and re-transplants that have occurred in this age group have been in Māori and Pacific people. This research aims to explore why adolescents and young adults experience challenges engaging with their healthcare requirements. A Māori health researcher will conduct interviews with the patients to hear directly what works well, or not well, in their healthcare so that we can then co-design a model of care that works better for them to improve their long-term health outcomes.
