Lay summary
An enlarged thyroid gland (goitre) is a common condition that often requires surgery, usually to relieve compressive problems such as difficulty in breathing and swallowing. The position and degree of compression from a goitre is usually assessed with CT-imaging and with grading scores based on patient questionnaires. However, the relationship between the imaging studies and grading scores is not well understood; further it is not easy to assess the potential benefit of surgery from the CT-imaging scans. We will use computer simulations and 3D printed models of the airways to answer these questions.
