Lay summary
Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people experience high levels of mental health issues and suicidality rates, compared to other populations. Physical activity has proven mental health benefits, yet TGD individuals participate less due to ‘safety’ concerns. The need for TGD-friendly facilities to foster community and support in the Whanganui region has been demonstrated in recent research; however, at present, there are no known ‘safe’ services available. Researchers will collaborate with Pride Whanganui to recruit Whanganui TGD people to identify and define the principles of ‘safe access’ around physical activity. Additionally, the group will identify, co-design, and develop a series of potential physical activities that, once set-up, will provide TGD people with safe places, support networks and community connections to engage in regular exercise. Following the identification of these activities, HARC and Pride Whanganui will collaborate with local sports and recreational facilities to set this up to improve access for TGD.
