Data sovereignty has been the subject of much discussion, and development, within Māori and Pasifika communities. Unfortunately, there has not been any parallel development of understanding within Asian, ethnic, migrant and refugee communities (A/EM), and this is an area of research where there is no prior scholarship. The tenets of data sovereignty from Māori and Pasifika scholarship form a useful foundation, but in several respects cannot be directly applied to the context of A/EM data. From across the sector – the ethnic community, NGOs, medical and public health practitioners – there have been calls to urgently develop a body of knowledge that maps the key issues for data ethics and sovereignty, as applicable, related to A/EM communities. This exploratory research seeks seed funding to undertake a literature review and key informant focus groups to identify and map the key issues for an ethnic community-focused data-related ethics.
