Lay summary
There are disparities concerning both the specificity and quantity of Indigenous research due to a variety of reasons. However, the dominance and implementation of colonial research structures and institutions are actively exclusive of Indigenous research ideologies, world-views, and knowledge within utilised frameworks. Therefore, creating an equitable research future requires addressing Indigenous-specific determinants and methods within research frameworks. The future of research frameworks should involve a Kaupapa approach, where Indigenous populations are involved within research processes (given agency, autonomy, and self-determination) and deconstructing and decolonising current Western research frameworks
