Lay summary
The use of artificial intelligence in pathology (computer assisted diagnosis in pathology/computational pathology) has the potential to benefit patients, health delivery and the economy. A clear consensus on the way forward is needed to ensure that the technology is deployed with sufficient safeguards to minimise risk and maximise benefits for the community. This grant would be used to establish a working group to develop guidance for the application of this technology in diagnostic pathology services and research. The working group will include: pathologists (including the applicant), Māori representation, ethicists, clinicians, scientists, computer scientists/software engineers, and representatives from other relevant stakeholders. Professor David Snead, a senior UK pathologist who is leading the integration of this technology into the National Health Service (UK), has also agreed to be involved. The output of the working group will be published guidelines applicable to the clinical and research environments in Aotearoa New Zealand.
