Lay summary
Dr Snita Ahir-Knight, an expert in mental health education and research from the University of Otago—Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, will lead a new research initiative focused on the ethical considerations of the parent-child relationship when a parent has a mental illness. The research activity will start with a scoping review to assess existing literature and identify gaps related to the ethical issues affecting children of parents living with a mental illness. This includes exploring the rights and impact on both children and parents. Dr Ahir-Knight will also engage with stakeholders, such as mental health organisations and Māori health providers, to build relationships and gather insights. The goal is to lay the groundwork for a future project that will address these ethical questions and contribute to the development of culturally sensitive and equitable health policies and guidelines.
