Lay summary
Nutrition is a key determinant of health and wellbeing, and patients with chronic diseases can face barriers to accessing food in line with their nutritional needs. Dietitians have a role in supporting patients and whānau through these challenges. However, the current approach to dietetic care and nutrition support is eurocentric and unresponsive to Māori needs. Building on previous research, the proposed study will use kaupapa Māori methodology and implementation science frameworks to co-design, test and publish a kaupapa Māori-informed model for dietetic care for dietitians to use when working with all patients. This project, which combines whānau voice, co-design of a Māori approach, and implementation, has the potential to positively influence the provision of dietetic care and practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.
