Lay summary
The aim of this placement is to partner with the Healthy Lungs Study, a longitudinal study focusing on early respiratory infection in tamariki Māori and Pasifika children and subsequent respiratory disease in later years. What has become apparent is that these children now 10-12 years of age have health problems which seem much greater than the general population, and that we still lack the whānau voice. The research activity will include exploring ways to compare the non-respiratory outcomes with a paediatric population at the same age and to capture important information from whānau to better understand the impact of the Healthy Lung Study screening work. As a paediatric respiratory specialist, it will enable me to advance my understanding of qualitative research and ensure important collaboration with researchers focused on improving health delivery for children at risk of chronic respiratory disease.
