Lay summary
We propose activation of the Brain Oxygen Neuromonitoring in Australia and New Zealand Assessment (BONANZA) severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) randomised controlled trial. Severe TBI is a major public health problem in New Zealand and is a common cause of death and severe disability following major trauma. Activation of the BONANZA trial will allow ongoing participation of New Zealand patients who have suffered severe TBI in this pivotal clinical trial. The trial will determine the effect of a protocol which optimises brain tissue oxygen and intracranial pressure versus standard neuro-intensive care management using intracranial pressure monitoring alone on survival with a favourable neurological outcome at six months.
