Lay summary
Aroā is a kaupapa Māori research initiative to strengthen political understanding among rangatahi Māori. Specifically, the cards invite rangatahi to consider their own positioning as Māori, and what they require from systems and structures to maintain their hauora as Tangata Whenua. The project builds on a 2023 Whakauae Research studentship, which revealed a disconnect between rangatahi and mainstream political narratives. A set of culturally resonant playing cards were created aimed at eliciting peer-led kōrero. This project will refine the cards through re-design, rangatahi-led feedback, and kaupapa Māori methodologies. Expected outcomes include increased political literacy and understanding of how health policy is created, stronger youth voice in decision-making, and improved equity in civic engagement. Economically, Aroā offers value for money by investing in preventative, community-led solutions that reduce long-term costs linked to political disengagement, social exclusion, and poor health - contributing to a more inclusive and resilient health and social system.
