Artificial intelligence (AI) scribes have the potential to improve the speed of clinical record-keeping and free up clinicians by automatically converting conversations between patients and clinicians into notes that can be incorporated into patient records. AI scribes are increasingly being used and while they may improve efficiency, there is limited and mixed evidence and they also pose important potential risks (e.g. to privacy). We will review available evidence and find out what clinicians and managers from across the country think, as well as developers, about their safe and appropriate use. We will work with clinical, information technology, management, consumer, Māori, Pacific and health professional regulation representatives and other experts to help us to develop a roadmap to guide the safe, effective, efficient, ethical and equitable use of AI scribes in Aotearoa.
