Lay summary
The effectiveness of interventions aiming to control acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and prevent its dangerous sequela rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is limited by a lack of knowledge of the ARF causal pathway. In this study we will determine the proportion of ARF cases that progress to RHD, and what proportion of ARF cases that did and did not progress were receiving regular antibiotic prophylaxis. The ultimate goal of this research is to inform ARF control and prevention interventions in order to improve their effectiveness.
