Lay summary
The proposed research builds on results from a previous NKK grant where we found strong association between expressions of ahi ka and hauora. In this proposed research we will explore how manaakitanga is expressed by members of Atiawa ki Waikanae and determine links with hauora enhancing potential. The iwi wish to work with whanau to see how this important concept or taonga tuku iho is being expressed and whether the link to wellness is a major factor for expressing manaakitanga. We intend to carry out a qualitative research project undertaking 30 face to face in-depth interviews with people who whakapapa to the iwi, 20 ahi ka, 10 living away from the rohe. The research team will use thematic analysis to identify key themes from the research data. The analysis will be developed into a final report for the iwi identifying strategies for the future.
