Lay summary
The New Zealand nursing workforce faces ongoing challenges related to mental health, including elevated risks of anxiety, depression, burnout, and suicide. Despite recognition of these issues, limited research has explored how nurses access and experience mental health care, including digital (e-mental health) options. This mixed-methods study will assess access to and effectiveness of mental health-related support for nurses, identify work-related risk and protective factors, and co-create a culturally responsive, evidence-based care pathway tailored to their needs. A national survey of 1,500 nurses, in-depth interviews, and stakeholder co-creation workshops will inform the development of a scalable support model. Outcomes will inform early intervention strategies, improve access to care, and enhance workforce resilience—supporting sustainable, high-quality healthcare delivery. This research directly aligns with HRC’s 2026 priorities, including mental health, workforce wellbeing, and system performance.
