Lay summary
Our Best Start hapū māmā research indicates depression is a prominent issue. Previous research highlights seven domains of emotional distress which can be overcome before culminating in full blown depression. Māori hapū māmā are at high risk of depression with suicide the largest cause of maternal death. Māori generally mistrust screening tools developed within a western paradigm and reject stigmatisation accompanying mental health diagnoses. Reframing depression as emotional distress is a positive way of assessing core anxieties and managing wrap around support from a wellness lens. We intend to audit records of a local iwi service and general practice for evidence of distress that either fits the domains or adds to them. Future research would extend into Te Ao Māori assessment of emotional distress based on Matauranga Māori and focused on the development of Rongoa Māori health alongside alternative appropriate cultural ways of assessing and treating maternal distress.
