Lay summary
This transformative study proposes empowering rangatahi Māori to identify research priorities important to them and their communities. Currently, research often lacks youth perspective and ownership, limiting its relevance and impact. The research will be conducted through creating and incorporating multiple perspectives, gathering knowledge from both elders (kaumātua) and youth, involving health professionals and community members. Digital innovation will occur using digital storytelling and social media as research tools aligning with youth communication preferences. Expected benefits from our community-based research include research embedded in local Māori communities, global youth connection with three Indigenous communities worldwide, research that better addresses youth health priorities, improved health outcomes through culturally relevant approaches, cost-effective research model that builds local capacity, and creation of shareable knowledge that benefits multiple communities. By centering youth voices, this study offers excellent value through sustainable, community-driven health improvements.
