Lay summary
This research explores the impact of bra usage, particularly ill-fitting bras, on mental health, body image, and self-esteem. While previous studies highlight physical issues such as breast pain and skin irritation, the psychological effects, including anxiety and stress, remain underexplored. Discomfort from poorly fitting bras may negatively affect confidence and contribute to mental health challenges. The project aims to assemble a multidisciplinary team to conduct a comprehensive literature review and systematic analysis to understand how bra fit influences mental well-being. It will prioritise cultural relevance by engaging with Māori and Pacific health frameworks to ensure inclusive, equitable research. Findings will inform the design of better-fitting bras, health policies, and educational initiatives. By addressing a historically overlooked issue, this study seeks to improve the physical and mental health of bra wearers while promoting well-being, equity, and culturally sensitive practices in health delivery systems.
