Lay summary
Rurality makes accessing information to support whānau caring at end-of-life challenging. As a result, communities are findings ways to meet their own needs. Ngā Pou Herenga: the funeral guides’ collective based in the Eastern Bay of Plenty (EBoP) was formed in response to a community call for choice in relation to affordable funerals and tangihanga. Tōpūtanga is a community collective of wāhine Māori who have connections with iwi and hapu throughout the EBoP region. Through their work with community, a need for resources to support whānau caregivers has been identified. Co-designing health related information resources with a community ensures that information is accessible, specific and relevant. We will work with Tōpūtanga and Ngā Pou Herenga and the community to explore the information needs of whānau caregivers. Findings will be used to inform a larger grant to develop relevant resources for whānau caregivers in rural remote communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
