Post-prison treatment and support in community for people with co-existing mental illness and abuse and addiction problems is conducive to improved relationships, and better employment and health outcomes, including recovery and lives free from offending. In this rangahau hauora Māori project, we take an approach that upholds rangatiratanga and tikanga Māori to scope the oranga needs of tāne Māori who have completed a Drug Treatment Programme (DTP) in prison, their whānau and the Māori communities (including marae, hapū and iwi) in which they live. Following kaupapa Māori research principles focused on connectedness, relationality and Māori identity, where we wānanga and hui with tāne Māori, their whānau and Māori communities in Heretaunga to understand what they all need to achieve Pae ora – healthy futures as Māori – is transformational in scoping health care needs with, and for, otherwise marginalised and vulnerable community members.
