Lay summary
There are significant harms associated with substance use that affect Māori communities throughout Aotearoa. One of the gold standard treatment approaches for people experiencing harmful substance use is contingency management, which is a behavioural health intervention that involves positively reinforcing abstinence from substances by providing tangible reinforcers. As Māori experience disproportionate harms in relation to substance use, there is an imperative to offer evidence-informed and efficacious treatments. The current research proposes to develop and implement a Kaupapa Māori behavioural health intervention to be responsive to Māori needs and to improve whānau ora.
