Lay summary
Children with neurodevelopmental delays and disabilities hugely benefit from early intervention services, which are best delivered under a family centred framework. Family centred interventions have been shown to improve several child development, participation and family wellbeing outcomes. Group-based interventions based on family centred practices have benefits such as peer learning for children and peer support for parents. For parents, peer support reduces parental stress and improves social and psychological wellbeing. Demand for therapy for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities through publicly funded systems, currently vastly outstrips availability of therapy resulting in long waiting lists. A family centred group intervention could improve access to therapy for many children and redistribute resources. This research aims to co-design and investigate the feasibility of a family centred group intervention for children with neurodevelopmental delays in collaboration with families and the child development service team.
