Lay summary
Non-traumatic brain injuries in children and adolescents can occur through stroke, tumours, infections, or toxicity. Young people with non-traumatic brain injury are an understudied population with significant physical and psychological health needs. The aim of this project is to establish a collaborative research team with diverse expertise to advance understanding and care of young people with acquired brain injury. Specifically, the research team will establish a process for Māori engagement, conduct exploratory analysis, and establish a process for disseminating findings to key stakeholders. The exploratory analysis will use the New Zealand Integrated Data Infrastructure, a whole of population dataset linked at the individual level and managed by Statistics NZ. We will examine the intersectionality between ethnicity, rurality, social deprivation, and non-traumatic brain injury. The outcome will be a research collaboration with established processes and an evidence-based research agenda that is well positioned to advance future research and inform care.
