One barrier to access in clinical research is the separation of research institutes and patient populations. A potential solution to this is to embed research within general practice, increasing patient and practitioner involvement in research, decreasing overhead costs, increasing dissemination of results whilst fostering collaboration between researchers, primary health care and communities.
Delivery of brief psychological interventions within the general practice consultation is an important part of general practice. Diabetes mellitus, a common chronic health condition, is one such area that has been identified where specific and targeted motivational discussions may have a positive health outcome.
The aim of this research is to review the literature around diabetes brief interventions within in the GP consultation and undertake stakeholder surveys exploring the concept of embedded research within general practice. This will inform the development of a pilot GP research programme, comparing targeted brief interventions in diabetes with the standard care.
