Lay summary
To ensure fair and equal mental health outcomes, it's important to consider the cultural perspectives and goals of tangata whaiora and whānau accessing care, as mandated by the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act of 2022. Engaging with Māori is crucial for any therapeutic relationship, and the Dynamics of Whanaungatanga (DoW) approach appears to be highly effective for fostering quality engagement and promoting health equity. Developed by Pā Hēnre Tate, DoW training is applicable to all age groups and is currently taught in various organisations. The aim of the research activation grant is to complete a pilot study as the first step to an entire research protocol. The pilot will help with planning and modification of the main study. Prioritising the improvement of our ability to engage with Māori is essential to achieving better mental health and addiction outcomes for all individuals.
