Lay summary
Pacific labour plays a major role in the economic productivity of the New Zealand meat industry, yet the high health burden and health service inaccessibility among the Pacific population working in this high risk industry has had little attention. We aim to undertake relationship building activities with meatworkers, industry, health services, systems, and policy to gain an understanding of the impact of existing models of health and safety, occupational health, and primary care services for Pacific meatworkers. The work will offer powerful insights into the day-to-day realities of Pacific meatworkers and the health challenges they face associated with their work. The work will prioritise research gaps and enable us to co-design with Pacific communities research that investigates opportunities for situating health services and wider policy initiatives to be more responsive to the needs of these workers and thereby help to address health inequities for Pacific peoples.
