Lay summary
This rangahau will assess how feasible it is to integrate oral health care into the public funding and management of diabetic patients at Ora Toa PHO (Māori health provider), and in the future, across Aotearoa. This grant will help to create and develop a strong diabetes-oral health network. Primary health services at the Ora Toa PHO are publicly funded by Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora, however, this funding does not cover the cost of patients accessing essential oral health care. Diabetes is a well known risk factor for periodontal disease, and if not managed will lead to tooth loss and impact quality of life. Identifying the diabetic communities' desires for comprehensive management, as well as building networks with funders and service providers, are central to this kaupapa to assess opportunities to integrate oral health care with diabetes care.
