Lay summary
Inability to sufficiently breath and to provide the body's oxygen need is very common in a wide range of critical illness states. More recently high profile illness states such as covid-19 have seen a dramatic rise in the use of mechanical ventilation. It has remained the mainstay of managing oxygenation issues when more conservative methods fail. Unfortunately the physical act of this type of ventilation can itself cause issues by directly damaging the lungs. We propose a completely alternative way for delivering the ventilator gases to the lungs that will offer a new modality for treatment of these very sick patients.
