Researchers inspire on new Māori career website

An interactive new website aimed at supporting Māori students and whānau to make more informed decisions about education, training and careers, features two HRC-funded researchers: Dr Melanie Cheung and Mr Maui Hudson.

The new website - www.maorifuturemakers.com - contains online video interviews of 30 high-achievers talking about their study pathways, educational achievements and work experiences.

Melanie Cheung (Ngāti Rangitihi, Te Arawa) is a neurobiologist at Te Kotahi Research Institute at the University of Waikato and the Centre for Brain Research at The University of Auckland. Melanie is currently developing a model of partnership for Māori whanau working with scientists and clinicians conducting research into Huntington's disease as part of a 2010 HRC Eru Pomare Fellowship.

Maui Hudson (Whakatohea, Ngā Ruahine, Te Mahurehure) is an iwi research developer at the University of Waikato. Maui, who is a member of the HRC's Ethics Committee, is undertaking HRC-funded research looking at Māori ethics in relation to biobanking and genomic research.
