The health of tane Maori/Maori men is one of the areas of greatest disparity within the health spectrum in this country and our project adopts Maori and Public Health models in an effort to address this health equity issue. This proposal aims to use kaupapa Maori action research methods to gather information through the programmes and networks of Mana Wahine Taumatatanga Trust, to build research-based knowledge of what is needed to improve the health and wellbeing of Maori men. We will gather qualitative data from programme participants, community kaumatua and health service providers on the topic, and use analyses of data to inform the refinement of existing programmes and development of new initiatives. The project will be focussed on the Kaipatiki Local Board area of Auckland’s North Shore, and the development funding will be used to engage interested community organisations including schools and health providers, enhancing and grounding the research design.
