Lay summary
My passion is in Pacific health and I see myself developing towards a career in Pacific health research. The aim of my qualitative research study is to develop a definition of deliberate self-harm (DSH) based on New Zealand Pacific people’s understandings and context. The study objectives include reviewing the general, ethnic minority and indigenous literature on DSH and examining Pacific peoples in New Zealand’s understandings and views of DSH based on key informant interviews with Pacific mental health professionals in Auckland. This study will make an invaluable contribution to the paucity of research literature on DSH of Pacific peoples, by satisfying an existing gap to improve the health and wellbeing of Pacific young people in New Zealand.
