Lay summary
The purpose of the proposed research is to strengthen the evidence-base to inform effective whanau Ora service delivery by Maori health providers. The project will investigate how Maori-specific whanau Ora concepts, such as whanaungatanga and manaakitanga, may be embodied in whanau Ora oriented service provision. That is, how these values may be expressed in areas such as - how services are organised and contracted, how services are delivered, information technology systems to support provision, the outcomes that are experienced by whanau and the way in which outcomes are measured. The research will take a kaupapa Maori approach, use primarily qualitative methodologies and may adopt a case study research design to investigate a specific whanau Ora model of care delivered by Taranaki Maori health providers. Effective whanau Ora reorientation of health service delivery that expresses Maori values has much potential to create substantial health gains across a wide range of Maori health priority areas including diabetes, respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease and child health.
