Lay summary
A hui was held at Ngai Tupoto Marae in the Hokianga in October to discuss the possibility of a research project examining the environmental and genetic causes of gout and co-morbid metabolic diseases within the rohe of Te Rarawa. There was agreement to pursue a research partnership between Te Runanga O Te Rarawa and the University of Otago. Central to the Kaupapa would be a relationship with Arthritis NZ, to provide concomitant education and support in gout management. The seeding grant will be used to support further planning of the research project (along with the educative aspect) to the point of preparation of a detailed proposal suitable for funding applications.
