Maori Health Research Career Development Awards
An important part of our mission is to foster the Māori health research workforce in New Zealand. As a Māori researcher you are not limited to these awards and may apply to other awards in our Career Development programme, dependent on eligibility criteria.

Rangahau Hauora Awards PDF 133KB
Provides up to $12,000 to enable people with a background in Māori community activities to obtain training in research skills relevant to a particular Māori health research project. Duration is up to six months.
Masters Scholarships PDF 128KB
Provides up to $10,000 towards one year of personal support plus fees for students completing the research component of a Masters degree as well as a tikanga allowance.
PhD Scholarships PDF 134KB
Provides three years of personal support of up to $25,000 per annum, plus fees, up to $10,000 in total research working expenses and a tikanga allowance, for outstanding graduate students in any discipline whose proposed research programme for a PhD is relevant to health.
Postdoctoral Fellowships PDF 151KB
Provides a salary for outstanding graduates who have recently completed a doctoral degree and propose to conduct health research in New Zealand*. Duration is up to four years full-time. These are awarded in the form of the following named postdoctoral fellowships:
Irihapeti Ramsden Research Fellowship in Maori Health
This Postdoctoral Fellowship honours the work of Dr Irihapeti Ramsden and her contribution to the field of nursing and cultural safety. It provides a salary for an emerging leader in Māori health research with a PhD or equivalent to undertake clinical or medical research* with a focus on Māori nursing. The Fellowship provides a salary for outstanding graduates who have recently completed a doctoral degree and propose to conduct health research in New Zealand*.
Erihapeti Rehu-Murchie Research Fellowship In Māori Health
The Erihapeti Rehu-Murchie Postdoctoral Fellowship honours the work of kaumatua Dr Erihapeti Rehu-Murchie and supports emerging leaders in Maori health research whose research focuses on topics in which Dr Rehu-Murchie was active: Maori women's and children's health; whare tapa wha (a four point holistic health model involving tinana, hauora hinengaro, hauora hanau and hauora wairua); health promotion or health policy including Maori and indigenous human rights. It provides a salary for an emerging leader in Māori health with a PhD or equivalent for research in the areas mentioned above.
The Eru Pomare Research Fellowship in Maori Health honours the legacy of Professor Eru Pomare and his contributions to gastroenterology as well as his commitment to high academic achievement by Maori. It provides a salary for an emerging leader in Māori health research with a PhD or equivalent for clinical or medical research*, and who propose to undertake research in an area relevant to Maori health. Applications from medically qualified individuals are especially welcome.
Hohua Tutengaehe Research Fellowship In Māori Health
The Honua Tutengaehe Research Fellowship in Maori Health honours the legacy of kaumatua Hohua Tutengaehe and his contributions to te iwi Maori and the development of Maori health research that is consistent with tikanga Maori. It provides a salary for an emerging leader in Māori health research with a PhD or equivalent for research in the following areas - Māori community health development; matauranga Māori; Te reo me ona tikanga; Te ao wairua; urban Maori; justice; or rangatahi.
* Working expenses for postdoctoral fellowships: Only limited working expenses are included. As an HRC postdoctoral research
fellow you should apply via our Annual Funding Round to better support specific research project(s).
