International Investment Opportunities Fund
An International Investment Opportunities Fund (IIOF) has been established by the Government (Vote RS&T) with the aim of increasing the ability of New Zealand researchers to participate in research collaborations that attract international co-funding, to recruit highly experienced researchers from overseas and to support participation in international research programmes with a high relevance to New Zealand's economic, social and/or environmental development. The scheme will give priority to opportunities involving bilateral partners identified in the Government's RS&T International Linkages Strategy.
The fund, established in 2004/05, has three separate but interlinked objectives:
1. Building international research collaborations: enables New Zealand researchers to respond to out-of-cycle opportunities to gain access to international research programmes and associated funding streams.
2. Developing international funding partnerships: creates joint funding pools with other countries to facilitate research programmes of joint interest.
3. Bringing world-leading researchers to New Zealand: assists world-leading researchers, working in key areas of strategic interest to New Zealand, to relocate to New Zealand and establish a research team.
Each of these objectives has a different administrative structure. Funds for Objective 1 are allocated separately to the HRC and the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, for each to invest using processes most relevant to their research sector. Funds for Objective 2 will be allocated by the HRC for proposals that focus on health research. Objective 3 is managed by the Royal Society of New Zealand.
The fund is open to proposals from New Zealand-based research organisations and companies doing research — including Crown Research Institutes, Universities, Research Associations and private companies. Objective Two of the fund is open to purchase agents in the first instance, then once joint funding pools have been established, it will be open to proposals from research providers (as for Objective 1).
International Investment Opportunity Fund (IIOF) 2008/09
Objective 1: Building International Research Collaborations
The HRC seeks to allocate funds to enable outstanding New Zealand researchers (including emerging researchers) to establish research collaborations with overseas research teams. The fund will support applicants to engage in research activities that will produce gains for New Zealand and/or the leveraging of overseas funds to support a longer term research project. A total funding pool of up to $1.07M over two years (exclusive of GST) is available for HRC-aligned proposals through Objective 1 of the IIOF. Objective 1 is open to proposals from New Zealand-based research organisations and companies doing research, including Crown Research Institutes, Universities, Research Associations and private companies. At this stage there is no restriction on the type of partnership opportunity that will be considered, nor on the health-related discipline; however, interested parties should consult the Request for Proposals (RFP) document for more information about priority investment areas under this Objective.
Applications have now closed and applicants will be notified of the outcome in due course.
