HRC FRST Joint Research Portfolio
Māori Knowledge and Development Research Fund 2008 Request for ProposalsJoint Partnership
The Health Research Council (HRC) in partnership with the Foundation of Research, Science and Technology (FRST) have invested jointly in a fund to support research on Whānau Ora. For 2008, the fund intends to support research on Whānau Ora that will focus on the distinct needs or disparities related to the health and social wellbeing of Māori that lead to policy intervention and development. This particularly includes distinctive solutions and approaches that arise from Māori knowledge, people and resources.
Project Grants
These grants are available for a research project of up to three years in duration. Research project proposals are sought that influence the achievement of Whānau Ora (health and social well being) outcomes through addressing distinct challenges for Māori in whānau, Hāpū, Iwi and Māori community based settings. We are seeking research that addresses multiple indicators of Māori social and health inequality and will contribute to an improved understanding of interrelated causes and identify potential approaches to addressing these. The research must be focused on developing solution orientated strategies with both policy and community end users.
Up to $900,000 is available in total for investment in project grants.
Advisory Grants
Advisory grants aim to provide community based groups with advice and support for research on topics that arise from Māori knowledge, people and resources. They are intended to translate and promote the uptake of research findings to provide practical advice that will be implemented.
The types of grants available are:
• Small advisory grants ($5,000) For a community based group to obtain an expert consultation with a research organisation to assist them in identifying their information needs, receive advice on research/science techniques or meet training requirements.
• Medium advisory grants ($10,000) For a community based group or business to obtain a detailed expert consultation for discrete projects. This is to apply existing knowledge held by researchers/scientists specific to one of the themes identified above.
• Seeding Grants ($10,000) For a community based group or business to develop a research and development strategy that identifies their priority research needs.
Up to $300,000 is available in total for investment in seeding and advisory grants.
Eligibility
Any organisation able to demonstrate capability to undertake research that addresses issues related to Whānau Ora and to undertake Māori specific analyses are eligible to apply. The team as a whole must have the cultural capability to engage Māori communities.
