The Research Portfolio Strategies outline the key national issues and research priorities in each of the HRC's nine research portfolios. When submitting a research proposal, researchers are asked to determine which portfolio(s) their proposal is relevant to. The HRC then checks the classification to ensure it is correct. All proposals are assessed to ascertain whether they address the priorities outlined in the relevant portfolio strategies. Research proposals that address the portfolio priorities are considered as higher priority if the application is recommended for funding to the Grant Approval Committee, the last stage of the assessment process.
Where applicable, the HRC has used the terminology from the World Health Organisation's international classification throughout its portfolio strategies to avoid confusion and provide a standard format. Health conditions are classified primarily in The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Version, (ICD-10) and functioning and disability associated with health conditions are classified in the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health, (ICIDH-2). While debate about the language used in these documents is important, some standardisation of terms is necessary.
