What's New
Parents and teachers targeted to intervene in children's smoking uptake Research reveals that the long term health implications of smoking are not ‘top of mind' for New Zealand parents when weighed up against drugs, alcohol and other public health concerns. The HRC funded study Keeping Kids Smokefree, aims to reduce the number of children who take up smoking and targets the smoking behaviour and attitudes among parents of intermediate-school students, instead of the children themselves. Taking a 'retail approach' to smoking cessation
HRC announces $83.58 million for health research 10 June 2009 New Zealand's health researchers have today received new funding of $83.58 million to carry out their groundbreaking work. The new investments will be managed by the HRC and will also support the HRC's new investment mechanisms and enable greater impact from health research. Click here for the media release.

Situations Vacant at the HRC 1. Project Coordinator - Maori Health Research (full- time position) The Project Coordinator provides support to the Group Manager, Maori Health Research to implement the HRC's Maori health research activities. 2. Research Ethics Coordinator Support is required for the HRC's regulatory role which promotes and monitors the safety of people who participate in health research.

Have your say on gene research Genetic research has always been a hot topic of debate. As science moves rapidly, decisions must be made about how genetic research can be carried out safely and ethically, and how it impacts on the lives of Māori. With this in mind, the HRC is launching in Panui a 'Gene Series' as a forum for debate about the future for genetic reserarch.

A New Research Investment Process for the HRC The Board of the HRC has decided on a new model for the annual funding round investment process. In reaching this decision, the Board considered the submissions made during the recent consultation period and incorporated a number of the suggestions into the final model. Click here to read details of the new investment model. The model will be implemented in stages, with the first stage applying to the 2009/10 funding round.
