Left ventricular remodelling in the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis
36 months

Lay summary

The heart continuously adapts its shape and motion in response to disease processes. This remodelling provides important information about the mechanisms of disease. The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis examined 5000 people over ten years using medical imaging to determine how hearts change with disease. We will leverage data acquired in this study, and in other large cohort studies performed worldwide, to discover how the heart changes shape and function in response to developing disease. We will use advanced computational anatomy methods to determine which features of remodelling are important for evaluating disease progression. This will enable more effective evaluation of patients and improve our understanding of the factors affecting heart performance. Software will be developed to automatically evaluate patients with heart disease against the population norms. These tools will enable more precise evaluation of patients and the effects of treatment.
