Lay summary

The proposed research builds on results from a previous Ngā Kanohi Kitea grant where we found strong association between expressions of ahi kā and hauora. In this proposed research we will explore how manaakitanga is expressed by members of Atiawa ki Waikanae and determine links with hauora enhancing potential.

The iwi wish to work with whānau to see how this important concept or taonga tuku iho is being expressed and whether the link to wellness is a major factor for expressing manaakitanga.

We intend to carry out a qualitative research project undertaking 30 face-to-face in-depth interviews with people who whakapapa to the iwi, 20 ahi kā, 10 living away from the rohe.

The research team will use thematic analysis to identify key themes from the research data. The analysis will be developed into a final report for the iwi identifying strategies for the future.
