A model of care for Māori and Pacific people with chronic airways disease
$240,000
36 months

Lay summary

Māori and Pacific people with chronic airways disease fall through the gaps in our health care system resulting in increased morbidity and mortality compared with the rest of the New Zealand population.

We aim to examine whether a novel model of care, tailored to Māori and Pacific people with chronic airways disease, is more effective than usual care in reducing exacerbation rates, health-related quality of life and exercise capacity. We plan to use results from our interviews, focus group sessions and discussions with Māori and Pacific community leaders along with current evidence to design the model of care then examine its effectiveness with a prospective, randomised controlled trial.

As there are few previous similar studies with a specific focus on Māori and Pacific patients with chronic airways disease this study will contribute significantly to the current evidence base with an aim to improve Māori and Pacific health outcomes and equity of health.
