The health and disability experiences of whānau haua
36 months

Lay summary

One in three Maori experience disabilities, yet while Maori generally receive less services and support than non-Maori in health, whanau haua are under-represented at all levels of health and disability consultation and decision-making. I will build on my PhD research with whanau haua. I will investigate the whanau haua experiences of health and wellbeing services through a kaupapa Maori qualitiative research design, analysing the outcomes of the interviews through thematic analysis. The outcome of this research will be:
(a) To explore an un-researched area of Maori hauora and allow me to build significant research capability in this area.
(b) Further research to develop an informative health and disability wero to Maori hauora and disability service providers.
(c) Translate the data to inform non-Maori health and disability service providers. And;
(d)  Dissemination of this information to relevant Maori disability networks and peer reviewed publications and presentations for professional groups.
