Improving Māori child health outcomes through Māori father involvement
18 months

Lay summary

If you want to improve the physical, mental, emotional and social health of Māori children and maintain and build on those early life gains throughout their adolescence and adulthood, the science tells us that you can do it by engaging Māori fathers early and often in the lives of their children. This research will build evidence around Māori father involvement, which will be used directly in interventions that will improve the health of Māori children throughout their lives and contribute to whānau ora: priority Māori health issues consistently identified by communities. The research will be located at the interface between mātauranga Māori and Western science, and will employ Māori methods and frameworks. The project is initiated and led by Te Kāhui Mana Ririki, a Māori community organisation formed out of the Māori Child Abuse Summit to carry forward the kaupapa of violence-free whānau.
