What's New Māori Health Joint Venture - Rangatahi Sexual and Reproductive Health Research RFP Improving sexual and reproductive health for rangatahi Māori is a key priority for the HRC and the Ministry of Health. Improving Māori sexual and reproductive health, rangatahi health and reducing the related inequalities are also priority areas for He Korowai Oranga, and are consistent with the approaches outlined in Whakatātaka Tuarua. Through this joint initiative, the HRC and the Ministry of Health seek to purchase high quality research that will provide an evidence base to support improvements in the knowledge of key stakeholders about the most effective ways to improve sexual and reproductive health for rangatahi. Rabbit virus offers promising new options

A virus that devastated New Zealand rabbit num-bers in the 1990s is proving a useful tool in the development of potential new vaccines and thera-pies against a range of cancers. HRC funded res-earch by 2008 Sir Charles Hercus Health Research Fellowship recipient Dr Sarah Young and Uni-versity of Otago, Dunedin, colleagues Associate Professors Margaret Baird and Vernon Ward is focus-ing on Virus Like Particles, created using the empty shells of rabbit calicivirus.

Research Partnerships for New Zealand Health Delivery funding announcement Five research projects have been offered funding to a total of $1M; demonstrating the HRC's committment to engaging frontline decision makers and health delivery organisations in high quality research. Successful projects include the following: delivery of mental health services to prisons, integrated care for high intensity ED users, integrated care in diabetes management, palliative care admissions and treatment, and point of care services for rural GPs. Reducing Tobacco-related Harm Research Partnership - Research Tūranga: Tobacco RFP The Reducing Tobacco-related Harm Research Partnership Steering Committee has identified an aspirational and high-level outcome of a 50% reduction in the number of smokers in New Zealand by 2020. The purpose of the RFP is to establish a Research Tūranga (platform) comprising of a group of leading researchers in the tobacco control field to develop a comprehensive approach. Cancer Research Partnership - Prostate Cancer RFP This RFP seeks to support a study that will obtain information about complications and morbidity associated with healthcare in New Zealand men after an abnormal PSA test. This study, which will illustrate the burden of effects of management of prostate cancer, will also contribute to a national view. Details of the RFP is available here.
Statistics New Zealand - Injury Information Portal The portal is intended to act as a network to New Zealand injury information. Funded by the District Health Board Research Fund, a part-nership between the HRC and the 21 District Health Boards, this project is one of six priority areas; with this study being part of the Translational Research initiative. The study, A virtual diabetes clinic: effect on outpatient clinic volumes, has established that a virtual diabetes clinic can substantially reduce the number of patients that are required to be seen in an outpatient diabetes service.

Environmental Health Joint Research Portfolio - Health and Air Pollution in New Zealand 2010 RFP Under the Environmental Health Joint Research Portfolio, the Ministry for the Environment, Ministry of Transport, the HRC and the New Zealand Transport Agency have established a partnership to co-fund an update of the 2007 HAPiNZ study.
