What's New High-powered genetics roundtable in Wellington The Law Foundation-sponsored Human Genome Research Project Law, Ethics and Policy for the Future is pleased to announce the 2nd Australia-New Zealand Roundtable on Genomics will be held in Wellington on Tuesday 24 November 2009. This year's roundtable will examine how genomic knowledge is produced through research, how it is used at the bedside in the clinical situation, and what sorts of parameters and safeguards are needed for using genomic knowledge. Winner of the Health Research Council of New Zealand's 2009 Liley Medal holds the key to fertility HRC Liley Medal was last night awarded to Professor Allan Herbison at the Science Honours Dinner in Auckland. Professor Herbison, of the Department of Physiology at the University of Otago in Dunedin, has been honoured for his outstanding work, which has made a breakthrough that may lead to new treatments for infertility. H1N1 Influenza: Rapid Response Request for Proposals - Closed The HRC and Ministry of Health have developed a rapid res-ponse Request for Proposals to initiate an urgent funding round for research into the H1N1 pandemic in New Zealand. The fund will support applicants to undertake research that will rapidly advance current knowledge of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus.

New Prime Minister's Science Prizes The Government has announced five new science prizes worth a total of $1 million, and some nominations close on Friday 18 December. The prizes are open to a broad range of nominees, with the largest award, The Prime Minister's Science Prize, encompassing the physical, chemical, biological, social and technological sciences, mathematics and engineering. Ten world-class health solutions aiming for the United States As a sponsors of the New Zealand Trade and Enterprises Focus on Health Challenge business development competition, the HRC is delighted to announce that ten companies with outstanding examples of some of the potentially world-leading health solutions being developed in this country, have been selected as finalists. Ranging from software solutions to medical devices and wound care therapies, the top ten entries include virtual reality training systems, hospital management software, anticoagulant management and monitoring, a wound care tissue supplement, a bacterial water checking device and an Asthma support programme. Research for New Zealand Health Delivery: Partnership Initiative Research for New Zealand Health Delivery has been identified as the HRC's first targeted funding stream. Complementing this investigator-initiated stream will be a new Partnership initiative focused on responding to health provider or sector-identified research needs for health delivery in New Zealand.

Additional funding round for Foxley and Girdlers' Fellowships The HRC is pleased to announce that an additional funding round for these awards is now available. The Foxley Fellowship (sabbatical) provides a salary to enable a health sector professional to undertake a research sabbatical at a tertiary institution. The Girdlers' New Zealand HRC Fellowship provides a salary for advanced research experience at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, for a New Zealand citizen whose research programme is relevant to health sciences.
