Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Health Research Council of NZ (HRC) joint initiative - Request for Proposals (RFP) 2010
A*STAR and the HRC have established a joint initiative to conduct collaborative research into cancer. By releasing this RFP, A*STAR and the HRC seek to purchase a number of studies in the area of cancer. For more information, the RFP and associated forms, click here.

The importance of good nutrition during the earliest stages of life is emphasised in a paper by researchers at The University of Auckland's Liggins Institute published recently in the on-line journal PLoS ONE.
Studies by Dr Deborah Sloboda and Dr Mark Vickers have shown that a mother's diet before conception and during pregnancy and lactation affects her daughters' growth, age they reach puberty and their later reproductive capacity – all in subtly differing ways. While Dr Sloboda's studies were conducted using an animal model, she notes striking parallels with some studies and anecdotal observations in humans.

HRC News Hui Whakapiripiri 2010 - Call for Abstracts 8 – 9 July | Rotorua Conference Centre, Rotorua The HRC is holding its annual Hui aimed at those who share an interest in Māori health and Māori health research. The theme of the Hui is Hangaia to whare korero ma nga pou rangahau e tu - Building your house of learning. This theme refers to HRC's Māori Health Strategy: Nga Pou Rangahau 2010 - 2015, due to be released at this Hui, and the significance of this strategy in strengthening the relationship between Māori communities and the health sector. The Effective Occupational Health Interventions in Agriculture project
Despite declines in other industrial sectors, the rate of serious injury and fatalities on New Zealand farms has remained high. In partnership with the Department of Labour and the Accident Compensation Corporation, the HRC commissioned a research project to provide updated information on attitudes, behaviours and practices in order to develop new policies and design more effective intervention strategies for those working in agricul-ture. Additional funding round for Foxley and Girdlers' Fellowships
The HRC is pleased to announce that an additional funding round for these awards is now available. The Foxley Fellowship (sabbatical) provides a salary to enable a health sector professional to undertake a research sabbatical at a tertiary institution. The Girdlers' New Zealand HRC Fellowship provides a salary for advanced research experience at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, for a New Zealand citizen whose research programme is relevant to health sciences. Three research projects focusing on the delivery of obesity interventions have been awarded funding to address chronic disease The HRC in partnership with the Ministry of Health, has recently confirmed funding for three diverse research projects under the Primary Prevention of Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases research portfolio. The broad objective of this initiative is to generate a targeted programme of research that will provide the evidence base required to reduce the incidence of cancer and other chronic diseases through primary prevention. The first three years of the programme has focused on tobacco control and nutrition, physical activity and obesity. Details of the funding and project summaries can be found on the HRC website here.
Māori Knowledge and Development Research Grants - Ngā Kanohi Kitea The HRC is pleased to announce $1.5M funding for the development of Māori capability and knowledge. Ngā Kanohi Kitea – Māori Knowledge and Development Research Grants provide opportunities for iwi, hapū and other community groups to address community identified health needs. International Investment Opportunity Fund (IIOF) 2010/11 Objective 1: Building International Research Collaborations The HRC previously announced that IIOF - Objective 1 Request for Proposals (RFP) would be released on Wednesday 3 February 2010. Release of this RFP has now been paused while the HRC await clarification of funding for this initiative.
